FAQ: Steelray Project Protector

What is SPP? Why are there two installers?

SPP is actually two software applications. An SPP user license entitles you to use either application or both applications.

The first application is the SPP add-in to Microsoft Project. Project Managers use the add-in to protect their project files.

The second application is an enhanced version of Steelray Project Viewer (SPV). With an SPP user license, SPV is able to open project files that have been protected by the SPP add-in.

Can I use the Microsoft Project add-in to open a protected file?

No. Only the enhanced version of Steelray Project Viewer can be used to open a protected project file.

Do I need a copy of Microsoft Project to protect a project file?

Yes. To protect a project file, you'll need the SPP add-in to Microsoft Project.

Does the SPP add-in change my project schedule data?

No.

Does the SPP encrypt my project file in some way?

No. SPP creates a separate project file (ending in .spv) file that is protected.

Does the SPP add-in change my project file?

No, but it does need to save the project file before the protection operation.

What versions of Project does the SPP Add-in support?

Microsoft Project 2000, Project 2002, Project 2003, and Project 2007.

Does SPP run on Linux? Unix? Mac?

Yes and No. The Microsoft Project add-in runs inside of Microsoft Project, which only runs on Microsoft Windows. The enhanced viewer will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Is SPP available in languages other than English?

Not at this time, but multi-language support is planned in future releases.
